It’s almost like they are speaking another language! It’s so frustrating trying to understand one another! Kid’s and teens behaviors, their emotional reactions, their fears and worries can make parents feel frustrated, alone, confused, and kind of lost. You might even wonder if you are the right parent for them sometimes.
You’ve noticed your kid is really angry, they yell, refuse to listen, and even hurt themselves, or you and their siblings. Or, they are so scared of everything and you don’t have any idea how to help them. Maybe you’ve also noticed that your kid has difficulty making friends, they act younger than you think they should, they can’t sleep or sleep too much, they refuse to eat or listen to basic requests. It isn’t that each day is a struggle, every hour feels exhausting. It’s just become too much to handle alone.
You might wonder, ‘is there something wrong with me? Wrong with them? Can I help them with these overwhelming emotions? Why are they so unhappy and difficult?’ You just want them to be happier, more enjoyable, and easier – you know they probably want the same thing. The parents we work with come to us because they want to understand their kids better. They want to feel a connection and to feel helpful. They want to know what to do about these conflicts, these behaviors that just don’t make sense. No book or article seems to be helping.
At UpliftME Attachment-Based Therapy we help to build the bridge of understanding and connection between parents and their kids and teens. We recognize that kids from birth to their early 20’s are connected to and reliant on their parents, and that where they are in their development, what has happened in the past, and how everyone views the present, matters very much in parent-child relationships. Instead of trying to find the right article or book, we can work with the strengths and challenges you each bring, to find peace. Together we can find a way to decrease the conflicts and behaviors and increase harmony in your home.
Why Parent-Child Therapy?
The early years of any person’s life will establish relationship patterns for an entire lifetime. As children develop they learn how to be in the world through the relationships they have with parents, caregivers, and close adults. From birth, children begin to develop their understanding of the world and of themselves. The interactions they have with adults help to form who they are, their ability to handle big emotions, as well as their ability to feel calm and confident today and tomorrow. Parent-child therapy looks at the importance of the parent or caregiver and brings them into the room, providing a two generation approach in order to help support both parents and children to develop confidence, ease at home, and enjoyment in relationships.
Therapists at UpliftME Attachment-Based Therapy are experienced in working with very young children in the process of developing their attachment style with caregivers (birth -3). They are also trained to recognize how attachment to caregivers influences relationships, self-esteem, difficult behaviors, and achievement/motivation in kids all the way up to early adulthood.
